CARV (Cincinnati Area Returned Volunteers) 2021 Activities

January 12CARV Member Gathering (Zoom)
Speaker: CARV member Steve Driehaus (Senegal 88-90)
Steve Driehaus is currently working in Erbil, Iraq as Senior Director of the National Democratic Institute. He
spoke via Zoom at the January 2021 CARV Gathering about his activities there and his observations of the
state of politics in the US.

Speaker: Steve Goodin, RPCV Morocco (1994)
Graydon attorney Steve Goodin was sworn into Cincinnati City Council in 2020 and temporarily replaces
suspended Republican Council Member Jeff Pastor. Steve is also the chair of the board of trustees for the
Center for Addiction Treatment, and spearheaded a $6 million capital campaign to build a much-needed new
facility. As a result, more than 1,000 new detox beds are available each year for those struggling with
addiction.

Speaker: Samantha Searls, representing the Immigrant Dignity Coalition
Samantha Searls spoke about the Immigrant Dignity Coalition, an initiative of the Intercommunity Justice and
Peace Center that seeks to mobilize partner groups and empower immigrants to “defend and protect the
dignity of the immigrant and refugee community.”

July 18, 2021 CARV/SORVO Picnic

The annual CARV – SORVO picnic was held Sunday, July 18 at Winton Woods Park. This was the first in
person meeting since March 2020 and we were happy to be joined by members of SORVO, our sister affiliate
from Dayton, as well as several RPCVs from Kentucky.

Speaker: Annie Scheid Jasinski (Jamaica 91-93) of Catholic Charities Southwestern Ohio.
Annie led a discussion about refugee resettlement in our region.

Speaker: Rosanne Hountz
Rosanne Hountz, Director of Population Health at Crossroad Health Center in Over the Rhine, spoke about
human trafficking at the November meeting. She is also the president and co-founder of Josephine’s Clinic, a
not-for-profit agency where survivors of domestic violence and human trafficking can find “professional,
volunteer, trauma-informed medical and mental health care in a victim-centered, compassionate environment.”

Speaker: Jeanne Corwin, MD (Central African Republic 1985-1987) Jeanne Corwin is a Cincinnati gynecologist and is involved with other physicians and healthcare workers in Physicians for a National Health Program.

Speaker: Arlene Golembiewski (Sierra Leone 74-76). Arlene founded Sherbro Foundation Sierra Leone in 2013 and recently returned from an extended visit to her former posting. She will update us on the many programs supported by Sherbro Foundation, especially those empowering girls and women.

October 16: Virtual Oktoberfest celebration (Zoom) – an informal get-together where we will have a chance to visit in small groups, and catch up with CARV friends and family.

November 8: CARV Member Gathering (Zoom) with Glenn Blumhorst, NPCA President. Glenn will update us on how the Peace Corps and the NPCA are managing during the pandemic, plus the future of the Peace Corps. We will also hear from recent Peace Corps evacuees from our area. They will update us on how they have been adjusting since their evacuations.
